It’s Not Worth It

Is responding to Becky’s text really that important? Can you really not wait until you get home to reach for the burger that is at the bottom of the bag in the passenger seat? All of the choices that we take in life will have consequences, but the ones that we put into motion when we are behind the driver’s wheel multiply the chances of receiving an unwanted result by at least ten. The majority of licensed drivers know of the dangers that appear as soon as they turn the car engine on. So why do they choose to ignore the well known instructions and drive recklessly without thinking of the lives of those that are around them? Is it pure neglect and selfishness or just plain ignorance? Choosing to drive with a cell phone or food item in hand is not an accident, it is a choice. Clearly, we must take measures that will further the education, in regards to road safety, of those who are behind the wheel. Improving driver education is very important and can support the overall strength of drivers by making it that much safer to get from one destination to another. One method that I believe may lead to a reduction in the number of lives that are lost because of poor motor skills, negligence, and driving in general is to have everyone who has legally obtained a commercial driving license take an annual exam that tests his knowledge of road signs, safety measures, and physical acuity. This exam would consist of a series of tests that would acknowledge every aspect of driving and would be conducted at the local DMV. Those who refuse to participate would have their licenses suspended for at least six months before they can finally register for the exam. This exam would hopely weed out the irresponsible drivers and replace them with those who are equipped with everything that they will need to know and do when they leave the house to embark on their journey.

I personally have never been involved in a car crash, but I do know some friends who have been victims of drunk and irresponsible drivers. The sadness in their eyes was apparent when they told me their stories and listening to them really motivated me to warn new drivers of the dangers of driving and notify experienced ones of the mistakes that they have been making for years. I was raised to be compassionate and think about others, but I have also been taught to be the best at everything that I do. Whether it be competing at the highest level in sports, or memorizing every road sign that may appear in the area, I have always been taught to work hard so that I would be satisfied with whatever result that my actions may cause. However, I have noticed that I may live with a few hypocrites. The ones who taught me to respect the rules of the road are the same ones who go over the speed limit and drive irresponsibly. I know that this is the case for many parents, as well. They hope that their children do not pick up on their bad habits, and fortunately for me I have not, but others may not be so lucky. Because their parents may not hold the rules of the road to a high degree, their children will be inclined to do the same and mimic their behavior.

However, I believe that because I am aware enough to notice the mistakes of others, I have the responsibility to remind them of what they learned in driver’s ed and help them become a better driver. Although I do not text or eat while I drive, everyone makes mistakes, and it is important for me to catch myself if I ever zone out while on the road, check my phone at a red light, or commit any type of misdeed that may result in an undesirable outcome. In conclusion, it is important to drive safely so that we can all feel more comfortable driving to work in the morning or coming home from an event at night. Life is already full of many stressful and tiring situations, so let’s not add dangerous driving to that list.
