Drivers ed is what teaches students how to drive. You are
taught all of the rules and most likely have driven with someone to
supervise you before you got your license or permit. They are
supposed to make sure that you aren’t a reckless driver before they
give you your license. They test you to make sure of that, but you
never know how someone will act alone behind the wheel. Most people
feel the pressure to drive perfectly when someone is sitting next to
them and judging their every move, but if your alone, your much less
likely to worry about making any mistakes or being extra cautious.
Although it is still very important that you go through these steps,
but maybe we should make them longer processes. With no education at
all, numbers of deaths and accidents would increase. Some people
just do not need to have their hands on the wheel if they cannot be
safe or have caused a certain amount of accidents or gotten a certain
amount of tickets.
You really have to educate people on the dangers of reckless driving.
Show them what their actions could lead to. If they drink and
drive, text and drive, etc.. You want to make sure they understand
what they are doing as soon as they pull out that phone or bottle. I
know that these things are already hashed a lot, but they need to do
it more. You could never show student drivers what they could do or
cause enough. Some students just don’t understand the possible
consequences of their actions. Create ways to reduce or completely
erase the need for people to be on their phone. Create a technology
that shuts off your phone when you enter the car. Allow complete
voice control cars to allow people to do as they please. They
wouldn’t have to take their eye of the road. More regulations are
needed to keep people from drunk driving or texting as they are the
biggest causes. Maybe even put technology in cars to let police
officers know someone is speeding in the area.
When I had got my permit, I was driving to a gymnastics practice with
my dad. It was dark and someone decided that they were going to pass
another car coming in our direction. They didn’t look to see if
there was another car coming and just pulled right out in front of
us. They were very close and I didn’t have time to react. It
caused an accident. They were going really fast and must have been
in a hurry, they didn’t turn around to see if we were okay either.
They left the scene. My dad grabbed the wheel and we almost went
into the ditch on one side of the road, he turned the wheel the other
way, and we did a half donut across the road and we flipped three
times. I couldn’t drive again for almost a year. I was
traumatized. Ever since then I have always been super careful when
driving and made sure others around me drive safe as well. I do not
want the same thing happening to someone else. I could have died in
that accident, and it really changed the way I viewed things. When I
see people who drive reckless, I tell them my story and they no
longer drive that way.
There are plenty of steps someone can take to be a safe driver. If
you are tired, you should not be behind a wheel. If you have drank,
are texting, speeding, not paying attention, any of those things you
should not be driving at the time. You will eventually hurt someone
with your actions. One day you may not be able to take back what you
did. You could get someone killed with how you drive. Driving is
not a right, it is a privilege and people should treat it as such.
It takes just one second to make a mistake that you can’t take
back.
