Being
A Safer and Better Driver
With
the advent of technology, many new innovations have been introduced
into vehicles that make them smarter and safer to drive. However,
these same technological advances have also placed drivers at greater
risk. The technology that was supposed to keep us safe has also
become a major source of distraction. This is why drivers ed
has become such an important necessity, perhaps much more than it
ever has. It is nearly impossible to ignore how much technology has
become interlaced with our everyday activities. We are constantly
monitoring our phones, browsing the Internet, communicating via text
or phone call and consequently our distractions have increased. It’s
therefore imperative that drivers ed not only include the basic
operation of a vehicle, but that it also educates the potential
driver to the responsibility they undertake in not only operating a
vehicle but also eliminating the distractions that may put them and
others at risk. Unfortunately, despite the warnings and despite the
evidence that proves how unsafe it is to drive a vehicle while
operating technology, there are those that are willing to take
dangerous and unnecessary risks. Resultantly, more regulations may be
needed. It will require law enforcement to be more consistent in
citing those who would violate these laws. In order to reduce more
accidents and deaths, multiple offenses should be met with license
suspensions. There must also be constant reminders via radio and
television that remind drivers that the consequences far outweigh the
rewards.
I’ve
never been involved in a car accident, I’ve passed through many car
accidents, and every time I whisper to myself, “I hope they’re
okay”. However, you can’t help but to think, why did this happen?
Could this accident have been avoided? I’ve got an uncle, he’s a
very nice guy. He’s got a job, pays a mortgage, has multiple
vehicles. He’s also married, and he has three young daughters.
Anyone who sees him, would say that he has a charmed life. But I fear
that he may believe he is truly charmed, and he takes dangerous
risks. Whenever we have any family celebrations, if there is alcohol
involved, he will drink. Many times, I’ve observed him decide to
drive home with his family under the influence of alcohol. Despite
everyone’s effort to stop him, he always claims he’s okay, and
refuses to give up his keys. Everyone fears that one day this will
end in tragedy. So, I made a commitment, I don’t ever want to be
like my uncle, so I have decided even when I am of legal age, I will
not consume alcohol. When I drive, my vehicle will be equipped with
Bluetooth, and if someone texts me, I will only respond via audio, I
would never text back. Whenever I have to be somewhere at a specific
time, I will give myself time to get there, so I don’t have to
speed. Small adjustments to my everyday life, can keep me and other
drivers safe on the roads.
