There
is no doubt that unsafe driving habits have taken over today’s
society. People die every single day due to reckless driving
decisions made by drivers everywhere. When kids become teenagers, one
of the most exciting things is being able to learn how to drive.
There is a new sense of freedom and responsibility that is thrilling
and exciting. However, it is important to know just how serious
driving needs to be taken. If everyone were to truly know the
consequences that unsafe driving could have, the world could be a
better and safer place.

In
today’s society, technology and social media have taken over. It is
rare that you see someone without a smartphone or some other device
that they use to connect with the world. However, this leads to one
of the worst distracted driving habits among teenagers and even
adults. Most people think that they can look at their phone or send a
quick text while driving, but it only takes one second to get in an
accident. Some things that can be done to stop this crisis is using a
rather new feature by Apple called “Do Not Disturb While Driving.”
When this feature is used, the phone will recognize when you are
traveling and it will turn off notifications to your phone. You can
even set it to send texts to loved ones to alert them that you are
driving and will answer them when you stop. Some other steps you
could take to eliminate the distraction of a cell phone is to turn it
off or have another passenger in the car keep hold of your phone
while you are driving. Some other safe driving techniques include not
eating or smoking while driving, keeping a safe distance from other
cars and always driving the speed limit.

Fortunately
for me, I have never been in a car accident. However, I have
witnessed one very close to me. We were on vacation and there was a
multivehicle crash right behind our car. It was terrifying to hear
the shattering glass and the loud sounds of the cars colliding. I’m
not entirely sure on how the crash occurred but I do know that I have
witnessed many driver practice unsafe driving habits, especially
since I have become a driver myself. I have witnessed people text and
drive, eat and drive, speed, etc. In Each circumstance, I realize how
dangerous it is and make the driver aware that I feel unsafe.

There
are many steps that I could take to ensure the safety of myself and
others. Some of these include offering to send texts for the driver,
making them stop and park to eat and telling them that they should
not speed. It is important to make people aware of all of the dangers
that come with driving and do everything that we can to stop unsafe
driving habits.
