Its
sophomore year, you are fifteen and a half years old and its time to
take Drivers Ed. You try to sign up for the same classes as your
friends with one thing in mind, get it over with so you can drive.
Drivers Ed is a very important class that should not be taken as a
joke. Driving is not as simple as just driving. It is important to
know road signs, intersection rules, lane changing, highway and
downtown driving, and something many people don’t think about,
maintenance of vehicles. The more informed the nation is when it
comes to operating a motor vehicle, the faster we will see a dramatic
decrease in deaths.

Some
steps that can be taken in order to increase safety and reduce the
number of deaths include making the Drivers Ed program more difficult
and requiring a renewal of your license test every 5 years. The
current Drivers Ed program; while it is informative, it is not very
difficult to pass the driving test or the written test. If the test
was tougher and required a more skilled ability to drive and a more
sophisticated understanding of the road, America would have loads of
safe and smart drivers. Driving is a potentially dangerous activity
and should be taken very seriously.

Fortunately,
I have never been in a car accident, however I have been in a
situation that I know many other people have been in as well, and
that is witnessing texting while driving. This is singlehandedly the
biggest problem that America is facing right now. Way too many people
drive down the road texting, not paying any attention to the road.
When I am driving with a friend, I always have them send messages for
me, and vise versa. No message is more important then your life, I
promise.

Some
steps you and I can take to become safer drivers are very simple. For
starters, wear a seatbelt while driving. Don’t drive with music too
loud because it can be a distraction. Don’t drive through yellow
lights, just slow down and stop for the upcoming red. Try to reduce
road rage by maintaining a safe speed and avoid tailgating. When
driving with others, offer to control the texting and the music so
the driver is not distracted. There are many things someone can do to
be a safe driver, and we all should. Remember, safety is the number
one priority.
