As
a licensed driver, I feel that paying close attention to your
surroundings and being prepared for any situation while on the road
is of utmost importance. I believe that one can prepare themselves
for the tasks and responsibilities of driving by participating in a
Driver’s-Ed course. These courses are designed not only to educate
one about the functions of a car and how to drive it, but also on how
to handle both oneself and one’s car in an emergency. It is for
these reasons that I believe that Driver’s-Ed should not only be
encouraged, but required for all new drivers as it will most
certainly save not only them but their fellow drivers as well.
Other
than partaking in Driver’s-Ed, there are many other steps than can
and must be taken to reduce danger on the road. These steps include
better enforcement of the speed limits and traffic lights, new and
diverse monitors in cars to keep numerous things in check such as
speed, position, and even possibly the state of the driver’s
alertness, although these theoretical devices should not excuse the
driver from being careless and reckless, as they should take care
that they be as safe as humanly possible whilst on the road.
My
conviction that drivers should strive to be safer while driving was
affirmed by the first accident that I have ever been apart of. My
mother was turning into a roundabout and thought that the man in
front of her had already gone on his way into the path ahead.
Unfortunately, she was incorrect. As we slowly crept forward at about
five miles an hour, the unsuspecting man before us remained still.
Before my mother realized what was happening, we rammed into the back
of the man’s car, leaving a sizeable dent in it’s fender; to make
matters worse, I was holding my month-old puppy in my lap as it
happened, sending him flying into the dashboard. The entire
situation was incredibly stressful for me, seeing my mother talk to
the clearly irate man that she just rear-ended worried me for her
safety. Since then, I vowed that I would do my absolute best to avoid
situations such as these by being as careful and diligent as
possible.
I
have seen unsafe and careless driving such as this everywhere I have
been in a vehicle, and its frequency is rather worrying and
disturbing. I believe that steps that I could make towards safety
might be being especially alert. This would mean that I always make a
full stop at stop signs and traffic lights, keeping my head on a
constant swivel making sure of where other cars are in relation to
myself, keeping my speed at acceptable levels, changing lanes
correctly, and always obeying the traffic laws. I believe that, by
following these guidelines, I will not only keep myself safe, but
that I may influence my friends and others around me to do the same.
Sadly, some drivers are not terribly concerned about the safety of
others, however, if safe and empathic drivers such as me, my family,
and my friends make examples of ourselves with our caution, perhaps
the unsafe habits of other drivers may yet be influenced.
