Dawg, just be aware

The
funny thing about driving, is the power. You can take a sample size
of cars, say about 20. You have 19 perfect drivers and 1 really
really bad driver. That 1 really really bad driver can do a lot of
damage. I’m sure this is why many of us have taken defensive
driving, or at least watched Netflix while skimming through the
videos and throwing up a hail mary when the chapter quizzes pop up on
the screen. When you get behind the wheel, there are rules in place,
but the only thing really stopping you from physically causing an
accident, is yourself.

Being
aware while on the road is the most important part of being a driver.
Following the rules, driving the speed limit, it all helps a
significant amount, but just because you do that does not by any
means prevent someone, say a drunk driver from drifting into your
lane and putting your life at risk. My dad, who is from Mexico City
is used to the more crazy style of driving and whenever I find myself
shotgun with him behind the wheel, I become a aggressive, second hand
driver. I check his blindspots, I make sure the road is clear when we
make turns, and I find myself being a lot more secure than just
trying to look at my phone and let the time pass me by.

Different
courses, like defensive driving, are extremely useful, but are very
monotone and long, which I think obscures a simpler message of not
only focusing on your driving, but also being extremely aware of your
surroundings on the road, and limiting distractions while you are
behind the wheel. No matter how good of a driver you think you are
(which you might actually be) that doesn’t stop the person next to
you from making a mistake and it costing you, or a loved ones life.
Driving is one of the greatest freedoms that is offered to us in the
21st century and people are stupid, so do yourself a favor, and
protect yourself by always being aware on the road.
