Don’t
Be Selfish

Knowledge
is power. But, ignorance is also power. In this case, ignorance is a
dangerous power. Ignorance is the power of a 2,000 pound piece of
metal killing however many people it chooses to in that instant.
Ignorance is the power to change someone’s life forever. This is
why it is important to educate drivers in order to reduce the number
of deaths due to driving. If drivers are properly educated, ignorance
can turn into knowledge and the saving of many lives, rather than
gravestones being made daily. Education equals life.

In
order to reduce the number of deaths related to driving, we as a
community need a plan of action. We as a community need to stop being
selfish first and foremost. One can watch all the videos, read all
the pamphlets, and pass all the tests they need in order to be a
“safe driver” but if they put themselves above everyone else on
the road, then none of that matters. If a text is more important than
a human life, then none of that matters. If a drunken night is more
important than the well being of others, then none of that matters.
So, step one is to become less selfish and more conscientious.

I
have never been firsthand in a car accident but I have been in a few
close calls or have had family and friends who have been. I’ve also
been a passenger in a car when the driver has been distracted. Being
distracted leads to more accidents and deaths in recent years. We are
preoccupied drivers. Many times I’ve been in a car where the driver
is on their phone. This is such a common occurrence that driving is
now mostly defensive driving and figuring out how to dodge everyone
who is driving distracted.

Like
I said earlier, we need to become less selfish and that is something
I am working on in order to become a safer driver, and this is the
way to help others as well. I am trying not to put my needs above
others but rather focus on the task at hand so that everyone can get
to their destinations safely, and this is what others need to so in
order to make the roads safe.

I
hope that this was eye opening to you readers, because if it is not,
we will have record breaking deaths; more than we already do.
