Why are so many people losing their lives on the roads? What can be
done to save lives while driving? I believe that the answer is to
educate drivers on how to drive safely. As experts have indicated,
the main goal of drivers ed is to stay safe and to save
lives. Every driver should be aware of how driving unsafely can
impact their life and others. Many people have been killed in car
accidents because of their lack of safety knowledge on the road. I
strongly believe that new drivers or even drivers with 20 years of
experience should familiarize themselves with the rules of the road.
By being aware of such rules, more deaths can be prevented due to car
accidents. One of the most important aspects of drivers ed
is not texting while driving. According to TheZebra.com, 4,637 people
died in car crashes in 2018 because of cell phones distractions. Even
though this number may seem small, unfortunately these numbers will
continue to grow if more individuals are not familiar with road
safety rules. Thankfully, there are steps that can be taken to
prevent distractions while driving which will lead to less deaths and
accidents on the road.

One of the steps that should be taken to prevent car accidents is
for drivers to take a drivers ed course before actually
driving. This will allow the drivers to learn about road safety and
the rules of the road. I recently started driving this year and I am
thankful that I was able to take a drivers ed course where
I learned how to stay safe while driving. In addition, for drivers
who are tempted to text and drive, before driving, they should place
their phone either in the back seat or the trunk of their car so they
will not be able to grab it. This strategy will allow them to keep
their eyes on the road. I have applied this strategy to my life and
always place my cellphone in my car’s trunk before I drive.
Although these steps are very helpful to keep drivers safe, not all
drivers follow such rules and sadly, many people will continue to
lose their lives.

Drivers ed has become critically important to me because
one of my cousins was a part of those 2018 statistics. He was hit by
a driver who was texting and unfortunately, my cousin did not
survive. This incident is an example of why driving safely is so
important; it can save families from so much pain, loss and grief.
Irresponsible, distracted drivers not only hurt others but they also
ruin their own lives. These reckless individuals are punished by the
law, sometimes being sentenced to life in prison. What might be seen
as a simple mistake of texting while driving can affect a life
forever. My family tragedy has motivated me to become a safer driver
and share my awareness of how essential drivers ed is in
saving the lives of many.
