Driver
education has proven itself to influence young drivers to drive much
more safely. In a study done by the University of Nebraska –
Lincoln, it was found that drivers who have not taken a drivers
education course are “75 percent more likely to get a traffic
ticket, 24 percent more likely to be involved in a fatal or injury
accident and 16 percent more likely to have an accident.” (Newman
& Shell 2015)
To
ensure that there are less deaths and accidents due to driving, I
personally believe that young drivers should be required to watch
video and take courses on safe driving. They should, in some manner,
be shown what the repercussions could be for being an unsafe driver,
whether that is being shown a video on the harms of the actions (and
make it graphic, some people do not understand the depth of their
actions without that aspect of it.) , or made to write a small
explanation showing their understanding of unsafe driving and how it
can affect them as well as others.
My
very first wreck that I can remember being in (I was in a small one
at a longer age, but I don’t remember it) I was the passenger in a
car with a friend who was driving. Instead of keeping her eyes on the
road as needed she decided to turn around and talk to our friend who
was in the back-seat while she was driving which ended up in us
colliding with another vehicle. On top of that, the person behind us
was not following the speed limit, and collided with us causing much
more damage.
Steps
I can take to be a better driver is to be more conscious of those
around me and their actions, focus more on my own speed and not be
concerned about “keeping up” with those around me, and to not
look at my phone or even have it in hand.
