Driving
is great! Being behind the wheel grants a great sense of empowerment
and new sense of freedom to new drivers, which causes drivers to be
more attentive and cautious on the roads to avoid their driving
privileges from being revoked. However, over time, people become
careless and begin to take advantage of this privilege by driving
recklessly, which puts people on the road more at risk.
As drivers become more
comfortable with their ability to drive, they believe they can do
other smaller tasks while driving such as rummaging through their
bag, eating their meals, and even talking and texting. This makes
driving conditions for others more dangerous for others and can be
one of many reasons for the amount of accidents and even deaths that
occur. Rules are always set in place for a reason, and in the case of
driving, it is meant to guide traffic while keeping drivers safe.
Therefore, understanding the rules of the road and having the proper
driving education is not only an obligation the individual should
abide by but also a courtesy towards other drivers that share the
road with the driver.
Although
laws are set in place to prevent drivers from getting distracted,
there are still many that drive preoccupied by other tasks. Smaller
distractions can be minimized by possibly implementing a heftier
fine. I believe that having a higher consequence to these
distractions can reduce the amount of these incidents that occur.
However, on the other hand, phone usage is an issue that should be
approached differently. With the continual advancement of smart phone
technology, the integration of smartphone usage while driving seems
inevitable. Therefore, I believe that rather than trying to strictly
prohibit smartphones, it would be in the best interest to encourage
its development so that it can work to become one hundred percent
hands free so that drivers do not feel the need to check their
phones.
Thankfully,
I have never been into an accident, but I have lost family due from
one. Due to the accident I am reminded to wear my seat belt before
even starting my car. Losing family has made me aware of the
importance of driving safely and the impact that one has when they
drive recklessly. So, when I see others drive recklessly I always do
my best to divert their attention back onto the road.
In
order to stay as safe on the road I can continue to remind myself of
the impact that I will have not only to my own family but also to
other families when I choose to recklessly drive. I also open myself
up towards criticism from others when driving so that I learn from my
mistakes and prevent them from happening later. Furthermore, I can
continue to follow the rules on the road and cut down on
distractions. By being an example of being an attentive driver and
informing others of reckless driving I can show others how to be safe
on the road.
