On
average, 3,287 people die due to car accidents each day in the United
States, most of which are teenagers. Distraction of technology and
even road rage are causes of car accidents. In fact, when I first
started to drive, I was the worst driver ever. At one point, my phone
would make a notification sound and I would be tempted to check it,
but I did not. In addition, I would not break on turns or look behind
my shoulder when changing lanes. Luckily, there were rarely any
drivers around me when I drove. Once I had more experience, I felt
more comfortable about driving; however, I should not be too
comfortable that I could look at my phone while driving. If people
could receive education about how to be a safer driver, we could
prevent having an increasing amount of car accidents.
At
school, my leadership class and I have stressed the importance of
safe driving to prevent teens from getting into car accidents. We
would give countless presentations and demonstrations that stressed
the importance of safe driving in order to have the students keep in
mind of what would happen if they were not following the safety
rules. Many teens use their phones while driving either to talk to
someone or to find music to play. Although it would make their car
ride more comfortable, it could cause an accident since they would
not be paying attention to the road. My school would send reminders
every day to ensure safety among the students. These messages
constantly annoyed students, but at least the students would always
remember the message.
One
thing that everyone could do to become a safer driver would be to put
the technology away and any distractions that could cause an
accident. Teens are very inclined to check their phone at the ding of
their ringtone. A life is more important than a phone. Therefore, I
suggest that people should turn off their ringers and always be more
aware of their surroundings.
In
my experience, I have dealt with people who would look at their phone
while driving and it would scare me on what would happen next. I
would try to make it a point to let those people know that it’s
very dangerous to look at their phone no matter how good of a driver
they may claim to be. As I said, a life is more important than a
phone.
It’s not easy being
a driver. Many people around us don’t care about their driving. If
other people aren’t being safe about their driving, it is going to
affect the drivers around them. Through spreading awareness about
safe driving through social media and school, people will remember to
drive safe. People need to drive confidently, responsibly, and
safely.
