What steps can be
taken to reduce the number of deaths related to driving?
Following the rules of the road is the biggest thing that can and
will reduce the number of driving related deaths on the road. It may
seem obvious at first but there are many people out there who drive
intoxicated, speed, or just plainly drive dangerously to name a few.
But in order to avoid these bad habits it is critical to understand
the dangers of disobeying laws. This is especially true with diving
under the influence and speeding. There are many dangers with both
and they usually coincide with one another. While being behind the
wheel, you need to be able to think clearly and make sound decisions
in order to keep yourself and others safe out on the road. Alcohol,
for example, diminishes the ability to think clearly, causing the
driver to make poorer decisions without even realizing it. More and
likely they will probably go over the speed limit, putting others in
danger. This is because the posted speed limit is the fastest you can
go on that particular stretch of road safely, as that road is not
meant or built for anything above it. However, just hearing this
information may not be enough for some so further action needs to be
taken. One step that high schools can take is possibly add a class
that teaches all of these dangers and how to avoid them with good
driving habits. I believe that this is important since it instills
the idea of safe driving early while teens are just learning to
drive. Additionally, stiffer laws should be passed by governments to
punish those who infringe the rules of the road. There should be more
outrageous fines and penalties so people will think twice before
drinking and driving. It would also keep more people to actually
follow the law since they know that there is so much more to lose
legally if they do not. At the end of the day, teaching defensive
driving skills (the best way to instill the idea of safe driving)
will reduce the number of driving related deaths where more people
will pay attention to what they are doing behind the wheel. Knowing
how to avoid potential hazards and looking out for them will keep
drivers more focused at the task at hand.
