To many teens and
beginning drivers, driving is a fun and empowering experience that
gives the feeling of independence and even “coolness”. The
feeling that driving creates from the perspectives of younger and
inexperienced drivers is very different from people who’ve been on
the road much longer. This often contributes to the road accidents of
today. The ego and ignorance of new drivers often leads to speeding
and reckless driving, allowing for more accidents to happen. The
importance of drivers ed to reduce the number of deaths as a
result of driving is that it presents the very real and hard truths
about accidents that are needed to prevent them. The truth about
accidents on the road is that even when your full attention and
effort is on driving safely, an accident can occur. So why risk
increasing your chances of an accident by doing things like texting
and driving, speeding, driving reckless, and not obeying traffic
laws. To avoid getting in an accident and reduce the number of deaths
on the road it is important to follow all traffic laws literally and
to the best of your ability. For example, when you are coming up to a
stop sign, it is important to come to a complete stop. This means at
the white line that precedes most stop signs, your car must be at a
full stop and not moving at all. Many people feel as if coming to a
slow roll is enough or slowing down just enough to make sure no other
cars are at the intersection is enough, but to put yourself in the
least amount of danger you must stop completely. I have one friend
who just got into an accident recently at a stop sign and luckily, he
wasn’t hurt that badly; he only needed 8 stitches for a cut to his
head, but the damage could’ve been a lot worse if he were driving
faster, not paying attention, or not wearing his seatbelt.
Fortunately enough, I haven’t heard of anyone of my friends or
family driving irresponsibly or been at fault during a car accident
which also gives me more motivation to drive safely. Some steps an
individual can take to be a better and safer driver as well as help
others become safer is to be sure that you are always paying
attention and driving to the best of your ability. Also, there’s an
expression in regards to driving that I’ve always heard during my
beginning years of driving and it goes “Don’t just drive for
yourself, but drive for others too”. This means that not only
should you drive worrying about yourself when driving but drive in
consideration of others too”. Many time people won’t see
themselves being at fault in an accident so if you’re driving for
yourself as well as others than many accident situations or close
calls have a better chance of being avoided
