Slow
down and think!
In general, our
society is in far too much of a hurry and way too stressed. People
are doing things that do not make sense and are not thinking about
the consequences of their actions. For example, on our way to a
family vacation in Maine as we drove on a major highway, I looked out
of the window of our car and I was mortified to see the way the
person next to us was driving. The person was actually eating cereal
from a bowl with a spoon and trying to drive with only their pinkies!
What were they thinking?! When I saw this, the first thing I did was
tell my mom so that she could be more aware of how the person closest
to us had very little control of their vehicle. Cereal in a bowl with
a spoon should be eaten at home or at a table, not behind the wheel.
The consequences of making an unsafe decision like that could be
devastating.
In order to be a
better driver myself, I need to take that experience and others that
I have seen or heard, and remember to check my mirrors very
frequently to keep myself aware of other vehicles around me. To keep
others safe on the road, drivers should check their mirrors more
often and also get assistance from their passengers in notifying the
driver if they see any careless driving going on around them. Proper
drivers ed will teach people these and many other important
lessons, skills, and common sense that should be used while driving.
The more people with proper drivers ed, the more safe and
conscious drivers there will be on the road, which would also lower
the numbers of automobile related deaths.
In general, to
keep people safe on the roads, following speed the limit, checking
mirrors, and using turn signals are all very important ideas that
should be common sense, but many people certainly need more reminders
of. In addition, the roads would be much safer for everyone if people
were more conscious of following the laws and what they learned in
their drivers ed, using seat belts, staying focused by
refraining from texting, checking blind spots before changing lanes
and using more common sense in not doing things such as eating cereal
with a spoon.
People really need to slow down and think about the consequences of
their actions, especially when operating a powerful machine such as a
car. This, and following the tips mentioned previously would result
in not only safer roads, but it would have a cascading positive
effect on car accidents as well as insurance costs. These are all
important things that can easily be implemented to stay safe.
