Mindset is key

One of the most
challenging parts of getting a driver’s licence is actually taking
the course and sitting through the long hours. However, it is the
most vital part of attaining a driver’s license. It is not
exaggerating to say that every time you get behind the wheel you are
holding yourselves and others lives in your hands. The fact that
34,000 people a year die from driving related accidents is truly
horrific. In this essay I will share my thoughts on how to reduce the
number of deaths drastically. Step one would be to change the format
of the drivers ed, especially if participating in parent
taught, making the format something that would be able to retain the
attention of its audience for longer. For example, the new format
could have the feature of self pacing. Whenever I took the course I
would find that I would finish the reading far faster than the
automated voice. While waiting for the automated voice to finish I
would become bored and forget what I had just read. By taking this
step it is more likely that people taking drivers ed will
retain the vital information necessary for being a safe driver. The
second step to reduce this number is to enlist the help of insurance
companies, currently taking a safe driver course you have the
opportunity to save some money on insurance, however, this program is
usually a one time opportunity. By making this opportunity a
bi-yearly option it saves the consumer money, the insurance company
money by reducing accident claims, and most importantly keeps the
number of driving related deaths down. Although I have never been in
a car accident myself, I’ve driven in the streets of Amarillo, Tx
and have witnessed quite a few accidents. My two steps come from
these experiences. Step one is geared towards the young adults since
it is a known fact that teenagers attention spans are not that long
unless it is something exciting that is keeping their attention, the
second step is geared towards adults, because as a young man who pays
insurance; discounts with insurance would be helpful. Regarding
myself I find that sometimes my guard drops while I’m driving and my
brain goes on cruise control mode. In some instances I get to my
destination and don’t even remember what streets or roads I took.
To remedy this problem I find that mindset is very important. Before
getting into the car and turning the ignition I must always remember
the responsibility I have as a driver. A driver must always remain
vigilant and focused. With this type of mindset it ensures that
everyone is a little safer on the road, because even if one driver
isn’t being vigilant and happens to run a red light or take a turn
where he doesn’t have the right away the possibility of an accident
occurring is diminished because other drivers react fast enough due
to their vigilance.
