Preventing Accidents

If
I had not taken drivers ed, I would not be such a careful driver
today. In drivers ed, we watched videos from real crash scenes
and learned how to stay safe on the road. The only way to reduce
vehicle accident-related fatalities is to first educate drivers on
the harsh statistics. One tip we learned was how to drive
defensively. You may be a safe driver, but you have to watch other
drivers, anticipating their next move and planning in case something
goes wrong. This is one way to stay safe and lessen the chance of an
accident—plan ahead.

My
family was driving home one evening. There were three cars behind
us. As we slowed down to turn onto our road, the car directly behind
us slowed down, but the one behind it did not. They rear-ended the
car directly behind us. Luckily no one was hurt, but the vehicle was
badly damaged and everyone was shaken up. The driver was obviously
drowsy or intoxicated. One of the easiest ways to prevent an
accident, then, is to not drive if it is unsafe. Designated drivers
are designated for a reason; with technology now, we can get an Uber
in seconds. I was researching drowsy driving and came across the
fact that driving while extremely sleepy is equal to driving with
.05% BAC (blood alcohol content). If you’re too tired to drive,
don’t!

Through
drivers ed and other educational programs, we can make the roads
safe for everyone, raise awareness of accident statistics, and become
better drivers.
