Forward Scholarship Essay

Galatians
5:13 has been a bible verse that has always stuck with me. It states,
“you, my brothers and sisters, were called to be free. But do not
use your freedom to indulge the flesh; rather, serve one another
humbly in love.” I have used this bible verse to help guide me
along this journey called life and have tried to live a complete life
of servitude.

I
am currently a psychology/ social work major and all while attending
school full time I worked at 2 local after school programs, and
volunteered for both big brothers, big sisters and a local program
called teen reach. I also work part time at my local Quincy YMCA
where I work in the nursery. At my church I volunteer in the nursery
and preschool. My church passes out meals on Fridays where I help out
as well. So, in all areas of my life I try to give back in some way.
All of these things have helped me put my life into perspective but
helping me to be more grateful. I get the opportunity each and every
day to pour into a child’s life and I think that is a huge
privilege to be trusted with that responsibility. In volunteering and
giving back to my community I’ve been able to see Luke 6:38 truly
played out in my life. This verse states, “ Give and it will be
given to you. A good measure, pressed down, shaken together, and
running over, will be poured into your lap. For with the measure you
use, it will be measured to you.” In serving my community I have
been blessed with patience, gratitude, appreciation, and blessed to
be put in a position to be able to give back. Working with children
has been the most gratifying and beneficial to my life. I think that
we all have a purpose in this world and Jeremiah 29:11 tells us that.
I believe that my purpose to be a complete servant, advocate, and
voice for children who are put in some of the most unfortunate
situations. By receiving my master’s degree in psychology and
social work I will be able to use that to counsel children and find
them loving homes.
