“Risks With No Rewards”

As teenagers and young adults, we value our first opportunity to
drive a car. To us, it is a symbol of trust, responsibility, and
maturity. Unfortunately, many people do not grasp the importance of
driver safety when driving a car for the first time, which leads to
many accidents that result in either injury or death. The sad truth
is that most of these accidents are a result of ignorance of driver
safety and drivers not taking the necessary precautions when behind
the wheel. If people took the time to properly think about the risks
and potential consequences that come with driving, there would be far
fewer accidents on the road.

Young drivers are prone to many distractions while driving. A
smartphone alone is enough to remove someone’s attention from the
road with features such as texting, calling, and a variety of
different social media applications. Devices as common as smartphones
put young drivers at an exceedingly high risk of driving accidents.
Both drivers and smartphone developers work to reduce the possibility
of distracted driving. Teens can put their phones on silent and leave
them in an out of reach area where it won’t cause a disturbance.
Smartphone developers should implement a feature that when activated,
would prohibit notifications from showing up and distracting the
driver.

I have fortunately never been in a car accident before. However, I
have been a witness of several instances of speeding and reckless
driving. Whether as a passenger or as a pedestrian, reckless driving
always makes me fear for my safety. I frequently must remind the
person in the driver’s seat of their irresponsible behavior. The
lack of awareness that drivers can have is what leads to many car
accidents across the globe.

There are many precautions that I can take to prevent myself and
others from distracted driving. I vow to take responsibility as a
driver by refusing to respond to all text messages on my phone and to
obey all traffic laws to reduce the risks of an accident. I will help
others avoid driving accidents by preventing them from dividing their
attention and force them to focus on the road when behind the wheel.
I can also help to improve driving safety by merely letting other
people know about the consequences that come with distracted driving.
By spreading awareness of reckless driving, it will help make people
more conscious of the possibilities that come with it, thus
encouraging safer driving.
