Eyes
on the road not waiting for your phone to load
Many
teenagers learn to drive and it’s an amazing thing for us, but when
we drive our attention should be only on the road. Driving education
in our country is a very important thing and it should be taken very
seriously. Almost everyone will have to drive in their lives in order
to get from place to place and it can be a beautiful thing. However,
most students and adults are at high risk of getting into an
accident. This is because we all check our phones and more often than
not it will be for something as trivial as a text. There is a reason
why we have to take driving lessons before we are allowed to drive
and it’s also why we have laws for the road. They are both there to
help us and to ensure that we drive safely and won’t get into
accidents.
In
regard to driving safely, there are steps that can be taken to
prevent accidents from occurring. One of the most important things
you can do to prevent accidents from happening is to stay off of your
phone while driving. This can reduce the number of car accidents that
happen. In a report on phone-related accidents in 2018, approximately
26 percent of accidents or 1.6 million crashes happened due to the
use of phones. Not getting distracted is another step that can be
taken and distractions can happen four different ways; there are
visual, auditory, cognitive, and manual distractions. Each of them
can be fatal in their own way so do not risk it, keep your eyes on
the road and focus on driving. The last major step that can be is to
not have any drugs, alcohol, or medications in your system while you
are driving. From an article in 2018, 31 percent of crashes happened
due to a driver being intoxicated which lead to about 88,000 deaths
that year. That being said that was 88,000 deaths too many; this does
not include injuries or emotional damage done to family members. So
the question shouldn’t be what steps can be taken to reduce
accidents rather why don’t we drive safely. Everyone is aware of
the risks of driving while using their phone or being intoxicated. It
is a choice we make and more often than not it comes at a great cost.
I
have sadly had the experience of being in a car accident, however,
luckily it was not a major one; no one got hurt and it was not my
parents’ fault. There was a lady that ran into the side of our car
because she was speeding and trying to cut over into our lane.
Therefore I am proud to say that none of the people that I know drive
irresponsibly. The steps as mentioned in the last paragraph would be
the best to take in order for myself and everyone else to be better
and safer drivers.
