Get Smarter, Driver Safer

Driver’s
education promotes safe driving, and teenagers who take it are less
likely to cause a fatal car accident. It gives students a chance to
learn to drive from a professional driver, rather than a parent who
may have a tendency to speed, make rolling stops, or operate an
electronic device behind the wheel. Having a professional driving
teacher is like having a professional math teacher; it gives a
student the best education available. A study done in Nebraska
concerning the usefulness of drivers ed has shown favorable
results. Those who took a drivers ed course were met with
less traffic violations and wrecks. On the other hand, those who did
not take any sort of course faced more problems on the road. “2.1
percent of the drivers ed group was involved in an accident
that caused injury or death, compared to 2.6 percent of those who did
not take drivers ed” (
Study:
Drivers ed significantly reduces teen crashes, tickets
).

There
is work that can be done to prevent fatal car wrecks. Based on the
results of the study mentioned above, taking drivers ed
truly makes a difference. It would be wise to encourage young
driver’s to take a course. Spreading awareness of the dangers of
reckless driving is also a step in the right direction. A story aired
on the news about an awful accident has the ability to sober the
minds of reckless drivers. Police officers and parents should also be
sure to enforce the rules of the road on deplorable student drivers.
Anything that could prevent a fatal car crash should be done.

Personally,
I have been in situations where someone is driving dangerously.
During my sophomore year in high school, some days my brother and I
had to ride home with a friend’s mom. Eventually, we stopped riding
with her because of her dangerous driving habits. The scariest thing
she did was text while driving right behind a big cement truck and
beside a ditch. Her eyes were off the phone for a good minute while
she steered the vehicle with her knee. I was honestly quite scared.
We did not have a wreck, but it could have easily gone wrong and
killed us all.

I,
too, can take measures to prevent fatal car crashes. All distractions
must be banished to the best of my ability, including my phone. I
must ensure that my focus is wholly and constantly on my driving
performance. I have to watch out for other drivers, check my speed,
watch my lane, and do anything that a safe, legal driver should do.
Most importantly, I can pray.
