Drivers
education are the training wheels on a bike. It helps younger drivers
to be aware of their surroundings and how to watch out for dangerous
situations. It also teaches them to follow the rules and how to
handle other reckless drivers. Drivers ed gives young people
experience before they are free to go out on the streets alone.
I
have never been the victim or initiator of an accident, but I have
had a part in one. Two teenage males with skateboards decided to run
across an outer freeway by a stoplight instead of using the
crosswalk. My mom and I were in our SUV on the fast lane. There was
more traffic than normal on our side of the freeway, the light was
taking a really long time and traffic was stopped. The boys darted
across a few cars ahead of ours. The first made it across without
incident. As the second boy was making his way across a very quiet
car – “one of those new silent ones” at the time – was moving
very fast through the intersection and hit the second boy. The impact
sent him skidding straight into the tire of our car and bounce a few
feet away. The woman driving the car that hit the boy was speeding –
only slightly – and talking to someone on the phone.
My
mom often drives pretty dangerously, but every accident she has been
in was never her fault. She texts while driving, she talks on the
phone, when she searches things up on the internet she uses her thigh
to keep the steering wheel inplace. My dad speeds only on
straight-aways when there aren’t many people on the street. He also
is known to road rage from time to time and drive very aggressively.
Refusing
to text and/or call while driving is a great first step to being a
less dangerous driver. Driving with both hands gives the driver more
control of the car. Only use touch screen gps or radio when stopped
or very quickly at stoplights. If the call is an emergency and cannot
wait or be avoided then use bluetooth (that is connected to the car)
or the speaker setting on the phone so that hands stay free and on
the wheel. Driving while tired should always be avoided as well as
driving while stressed or with a high emotion level. Practicing night
time driving is a great way to avoid accidents in the dark. Having an
adult who can drive or at last a driver in training can also help
prevent accidents. Another set of eyes can see what the driver may
have not and can make the driver aware
