Beware
the Quiet Road

On
a bright and sunny day my third- grade teacher order everyone to line
up and head to the front of the school. The sudden change in schedule
caused my class to buzz with excitement, yet our teacher explained
that this was not a joyous occasion. As my class stood confused at
the front of the school, staff and officers bowed their heads as a
man read aloud about a student from my school. This young girl was
hit by a car on a quiet road that everyone in my area knew about.
This road was just like any other road except that it had been
stained with the blood and skin of this student. We released yellow
balloons to the sky and watched them disappear into the brilliant
blue until they became specks as small as a pencil dot in an eerie
silence. The event explained marks the earliest memory I have with
deaths relating to driving.

The
importance of drivers ed cannot be overstated in its effect
with reducing the number of deaths involved with driving. New drivers
lack the experience on the road, so it is important to prepare them
for a range of situations concerning pedestrians and fellow drivers.
Understanding the rules on the road would greatly influence the
driver to make the best decision possible. To reduce the number of
deaths related to driving, drivers should remove all distracters
within their reach such as, electronic devices, food, and grooming
tools. Drivers should also beware the quiet road since not many would
anticipate that pedestrians would linger at dusk on narrow,
unsupervised roads.

As
a relatively new driver, I have not been in a car accident and I hope
to avoid that experience. Over the years my parents told me of their
experience of close calls and unnerving stories of large collisions.
Additionally, I have my own record of observing cars that have
already been destroyed after the car accident. To facilitate change
for safer driving, certain habits should be promoted while driving.
Proper car maintenance is important for all drivers ranging from a
small scratch on the front windshield to a flat tire. Obeying the
speed limit and remaining focused while driving are other key tips
for safer driving. Pedestrians should also beware the quiet road
since there is no one-hundred percent prevention of reckless driving.
If they need to walk alongside a road it is imperative that they are
visible for drivers by wearing a reflective clothing or white. Let us
all practice good driving habits to protect drivers and pedestrians.
