Drivers
education isn’t taken as seriously as it should be. I remember
breezing right past my online class, barely focusing on anything, it
all just seemed like a waste of time but, little did I know how
important it would be. Drivers ed allows new drivers to
understand how their vehicle works, how to operate it safely, what
the laws are, and how to follow the law. However, it fails to portray
how dangerous and nasty driving can become. Over a million people die
per year in automobile crashes and a percentage of these incidents
could’ve been avoided. If people clearly understood the effects of
a major collision, then they would be more likely to drive in a safer
manner. Most people, thankfully, have yet to be apart of a major
collision and this leads to a belief that, “It won’t be me.”
Being educated, not only on safe driving, but understanding logically
and emotionally the pains that derive from being in an accident is
the only way to reduce the number of deaths. A million people die per
year to a problem that could be fixed today.
New
and old drivers alike need to understand the negatives of operating a
motor vehicle. Drivers need to hear how truly dangerous it is through
the experience of others and the belief that it won’t be me needs
to be erased from the minds of drivers across the world, only then
would the number of deaths related to driving be reduced. It has to
be fully understood that, one’s actions could cause the death of
another person’s daughter, their father, someone’s brother, or a
loved one’s mother. Drivers need to understand that they could kill
someone, the person who had a full life and a family, dead because of
their actions.
January
1st, 2019. 9:10pm, a white coupe drives down a long road when a truck
drives out from a stop sign, ramming into the coupe and demolishing
the passenger side. I got out of white coupe after the airbags had
deployed, flinging my glasses off my face as I slammed into them. As
I saw the wreck that laid in front of me, I realized what had
happened, he had been distracted and ran the sign, slamming into me.
I stood in the cold waiting for my parents, only then did I realize
how dangerous driving could be, even if you did everything in your
power to drive safe.
The
simple understanding of how fragile life is the biggest step to safe
driving but there are many other steps. Don’t drive distracted, a
single text is not worth more than a person’s life, if you aren’t
in the right state of mind to drive, don’t, there are other
options, and finally ensure everything in your car is properly
maintained. Prepare for the worst so if it does happen, you’ll be
as safe.
