Getting your
license is one of the most exciting things you get when you’re
becoming an adult. You’re finally able to go out with your friends
without your parents tagging along. You can jam out to whatever music
you want to without hearing complaints. You are able to drive to
leave wherever you are without calling and waiting for someone to
pick you up. I know that for me, my first drive alone was an amazing
feeling. I was free. There were no nagging parents telling what to
do. Driving really can be an exhilarating thing, but it can also be
extremely dangerous.
We all know the
famous quote, “With great power comes great responsibility.”
Driving is a very powerful thing. You have the power to take away you
or someone else’s life. Being informed on the dos and don’ts of
driving can mean the difference between life and death.
Personally, I
was in a car accident my first few months of getting my license. I
was looking over at the phone my boyfriend was holding in the
passenger seat and didn’t notice that I had swerved off onto the
shoulder of the road. When I looked back out the windshield I was
about to hit a mailbox. The funny thing is the first thought that
went through my head when I saw that mailbox was, “My dad’s going
to kill me if I hit that mailbox and dent this car.” Next thing I
knew I pulled so hard to the left that one of my tires had come off
the rim and caused me to have no control of where the car went. In
result, my car ended up rolling a few times in a ditch, but luckily
the passenger and I were completely unharmed while my car was
totaled. I can tell you that my dad probably would’ve been happier
with a dented car versus a totaled car, but that’s okay.
Like I said earlier, knowing the dos and don’ts of driving means
the difference between life and death. If I would’ve not been
distracted by looking at the phone, easily turned my wheel to the
left, or simply just braked, that whole accident could’ve been
avoided. Luckily, there were no other cars around and nobody in the
back seat. By being informed on what to do in certain instances
you’re unquestionably going to get into while driving, you will
save someone’s life.
