Dangers
of Unsafe Driving
Everyday
more than 90 people are killed in car accidents everyday and an
average of two million people experience permanent injuries that stay
as a reminder of the tragic event that occurred. The knowledge
accessed from drivers ed is vital to the prevention and
reduction of deaths from driving. Learning the importance of safe
driving before getting on the road is trivial to some people and
therefore not practiced adequately. Drivers ed provides the
necessary information needed to make sure the driver and others on
the road get from point a to point b safely. Information such as
defensive driving and what to do in emergency situations. Even the
little things such as wearing a seatbelt at all times and not being
occupied by your phone make an enormous difference in preventing
fatal accidents. One in seven people do not wear seatbelts while
driving and run a risk of getting severely injured in an accident
compared to somebody else who was wearing a seatbelt. To add on, each
day more than nine people are killed due to distracted driving and it
was reported that distracted driving was a factor in one in five
crashes where somebody was injured. Drivers ed would make aware
of the potential dangers when safe driving procedures are not being
practiced religiously. Furthermore, several steps should be taken to
ensure the safety of others on the road. For one, drivers ed
should be made mandatory for anyone obtaining a license. In Georgia,
for example, once you have reached the age of seventeen it is no
longer mandatory to take Drivers Ed in order to acquire a license,
so if those people choose not to participate in Drivers ed
then they lack the knowledge of important safety skills and practices
that will reduce the number of accidents that occur daily. Driver
Education will be able to teach and engrave the importance of driving
safely especially to young new drivers who cannot wait to get on the
road. The first steps taken should be to invest into Drivers ed
and make it something more prominent in the community. We should make
sure that everyone has accessibility to some form of driver’s
education that will prepare them for the road, maybe even going as
far as offering a couple of free classes for those who cannot afford
to pay the full price of taking the course due to financial reasons.
Another step would be to continue to reiterate, especially to the
youth, why it is important to drive safe and the potential dangers of
what could happen if not taken seriously. Even though I have never
been in a car accident, I am aware of the dangers and serious
problems that unsafe driving can bring to all parties on the road.
And because of that I am making sure everyday to not get distracted
while on the road and be aware of my surroundings. More knowledge
equals less lives being taken.
