What
if there’s a Better Solution?

It’s
important for people to partake in drivers ed because they
become familiar with the rules of the road before they even get into
a car and start driving; this, ideally, results in less car
accidents. If someone were to start driving without being previously
educated, they would be putting themselves and others at risk. They
may know to stop at a red light but do they know who they’re
supposed to yield to or how to park a car without damaging the car
next to them? When I’m on the road, I notice more adults than
teenagers driving recklessly or unsafely. I think it’s because it’s
been so long since they were fully educated about driving. Some
adults may take pride in their driving skills and think it’s safe
to eat or text while driving or to speed a little bit. It’s so
crucial that every one, teenagers and adults included, be educated
about driving safety.

One
way we can reduce deaths related to driving is by increasing the
availability, accessibility and speed of public transportation. If
more people used public transportation devices, such as trains or
buses, less people would be on the road, lowering the death rate
related to driving. When my family first moved to Texas, my dad
talked about taking the train to work everyday to avoid traffic.
However, his current route to work by car took him about forty five
minutes but by train it would take two and a half hours. This is
because the train backtracks to other towns and cities before
reaching the city where his work is located. If there were more
routes that would allow him to get to work quicker or at the same
speed as his car, then he would take the train. That would mean he
would reduce his time on the road by seven and a half hours each
week. Imagine if this were the case for the 1.341 million people
living in Dallas, TX who drive to work every day.

I
would love to see this become a reality. I was in a minor car
accident just last month, my friend zoned out and didn’t realize
the light at the intersection we were approaching was red. I yelled
at her to stop and she stopped halfway over the line and hit the tail
end of a car who was turning. No one was severely injured but I’ve
been experiencing back and neck pain and have been to the
chiropractor several times since the accident. Maybe if we felt safe
taking public transportation or even if the person in the car we hit
had taken the train or bus, this situation could’ve been avoided

When
I’m driving, I want to be the person my friends feel safe getting
into a car with. I do that by first off making sure my phone is
turned off, is out of reach and out of sight; I also don’t eat and
drive or play music loudly. I want to be as focused as I can because
I could very easily take my own life and the life of anyone in the
car with me. Nonetheless, if public transportation were safer and
quicker less people would be on the road resulting in less driving
related deaths.
