The importance of
drivers ed is awareness to drivers. Not just drivers in general but
bad drivers. We’ve all seen them, trying to three-point turn in a
parking deck inches away from their next victim. These are the
people that must be educated on the dangers of driving and the
culprits are not always young people. Reducing the number of deaths
in driving starts by targeting the bad drivers in an area and
requiring that there be change. This change can come in the form of
a mandatory drivers ed class for these people for example or higher
insurance rates/government fines on reckless drivers. Either way, we
as a nation must send the message to all reckless drivers that we
want to be safe on the road again and punish those who put that
safety in question.

Next, piggybacking
on the punishment of said rule breakers, we have to make them feel
like they are doing something morally incorrect because breaking laws
and putting lives in danger doesn’t seem to do it. Significantly
rising the rates of reckless drivers’ insurance companies will
force the assailants to do one of two things: drive without
insurance, or drive safer. Making the fact that reckless driving is
unacceptable and will no longer be tolerated will lower the amount of
traffic deaths we have every year. These reckless drivers may not be
strictly bad drivers but those who use their phones while driving, or
drive under the influence. All are just as bad and assimilate into
the kind of experience no one needs while on the road. Adding
punishment that affects the financial status of these reckless
drivers will make them think twice about pushing 75 on a 40 mph
street. I have to admit, I have been in a car with relatives while
they were driving recklessly and I did my best to let them know of
that. It shouldn’t matter who the person is when it comes to
reckless driving as everyone on the road is someone’s family.
Having the courage to say something and speak out about it may save
their lives and their victims lives. My first proposition is that we
put our phones in the back seat on silent so we are not tempted to
check them at every red light. That way it’s too much work to
reach back and grab it. As for drinking and driving, we live in the
age of transportation services so there is no excuse when you go out
drinking with a friend that your sober friend would let you drive off
drunk and risk jail time or your life when you could spend a little
extra money and get home safe in a timely fashion. Part of the
problem is that these reckless drivers are reckless in other areas of
their lives and will go drinking by themselves and use their clouded
judgement to determine whether they can make it home that night. A
solution to these kinds of drivers is to have clubs offer
complimentary uber or lyft services within a certain mile radius to
their customers after a certain number of drinks. Everyone involved
making a driver reckless must also get involved in limiting the
reckless drivers on the streets and convert as many of them to be
responsible and safe drivers by any means necessary. We cannot
continue to allow people to be killed on the road due to human error
and irresponsibility when it is blatantly avoidable. Society is very
much attached to the idea of capitalism at all costs and they would
most likely feel the cost of implementing such a service outweighs
the cost of maintaining clubs as they are. This would lead to the
same old cycle of negligence when it comes to America’s problems.
This is why we as citizens must demand something be done and be
prepared to take on the responsibility ourselves. Even if that means
we stand by ourselves.
