Driving
Is Not A Right
Ever
since I was young, I was eager to get behind the wheel. I was allowed
to get quite the experience at a young age due to the thrilling ride
Autopia at Disneyland Parks, and to this day I still give credit to
this ride for my success as a driver now. Despite my efforts to
practice safe driving technique; there is always at least one car
testing my limits. This, of course, means that the road is not always
safe, and the importance of drivers ed cannot be forgotten due
to the increasing number of new drivers each year.
People
are fully aware of the problem at hand. But the question is, are they
willing to put in the work and effort to resolve it? All young
drivers must endure the drivers ed course, take the permit test, and
the actual drivers test. However, recently these courses (that can be
completed at home) have turned into a joke that few new drivers take
seriously due to the new ways that students cheat. Driving is not a
joke because you are not only putting your life in danger, but you’re
affecting those around you as well. This is a concept that needs to
be emphasized throughout the driving courses and would help reduce
the number of deaths victim to reckless driving.
Many
young drivers do not have the option to learn properly from their
parents, therefore the courses they endure cannot be vague.
However,
in driving kids do not learn from taking tests, they learn from hands
on experience which is why instruction behind the wheel is so
important. Instructors need to take in consideration that these new
drivers may not have a proper mentor and tailor their comments
towards their needs. It is important to establish a sense of trust
between the student and instructor because this bond will help them
learn and grow.
Sadly,
I am fully aware of the dangers on the road because I have witnessed
several accounts of reckless driving. It is somewhat ironic that I
discovered this scholarship because just last week, three of my dear
friends were involved in an accident due to the negligence of other
drivers. All three accidents were caused by an older adult that had
made serious mistakes that caused each of these girls to total their
cars. Parents and older drivers need to be more diligent about their
own driving abilities in order to be better role models for their
children who are trying to learn from them and improve.
Understanding
that driving is a privilege, not a right, will help me practice safe
driving habits and cause me to be grateful to have the opportunity to
drive. If someone is grateful for what they have, they are less
likely to risk it all and lose everything. Teaching someone to have
proper morals is no easy task, however it will prove to be extremely
beneficial to these new drivers on the road.
