The Importance of Education
Driver education is vital to reduce the number of deaths that occur on the road.
The drivers Ed that most teens take not only teaches the rules of the road, but illustrates the dangers distracted driving can bring. In my drivers Ed course we watched videos and discussed the consequences of distracted driving. We discussed measures that we can take before we get on the road to avoid accidents. When I began to drive with my dad, I remembered the lessons and used those skills in my everyday life. When I see people in the news getting into accidents because of their phones or not paying attention I realize how important it was that I received good instruction through my driver Ed course.
Even though many have received driving instruction, accidents happen frequently leading to injury and death. One way to reduce the number of accidents is to eliminate all distractions. Modern technology has allowed for countless distractions. A simple way to avoid distractions is to turn down the volume on the car stereo. By doing this drivers will be more aware of their surroundings and can hear if people are honking. Another way to avoid getting distracted is to not answer the phone. Whatever call or text you’re receiving can wait until you are in a position to safety answer it. The safety of yourselves and others is far more important than checking text messages.
While I have never been in a car accident I have been in a car with an irresponsible driver. My friends and I had the music playing very loud and while driving a bit fast. We had five people in the car and the driver was inexperienced. We ended up getting a bit lost and it was up to me to get us back on track. That experience has stayed with me, influencing how I drive . When I began to drive more often, I kept the music down, drove with only one other person in the car, and always have a sense of where I’m headed. I’m grateful for this experience so I can advise others on proper driving conduct.
Even though I’ve been driving for quite some time, I’m not perfect. There are ways I can improve on my driving skills. Often while I’m driving I will get tunnel vision, and lose sight of my surroundings. I need to remember that anything can happen and I should always stay alert on my surroundings for the safety of myself and others. That being said there are ways that others can also be safer on the rode. For instance, just slow down. I understand that in this fast paced world we feel the need to constantly be on the move, but slowing down can save lives. The safety tips we were told as children sound kind of cheesy, but are so important when actually driving. The driving education we receive plays a major role in the reduction of driving related deaths.
