Dangers of Driving
38,000 yearly deaths occur just in the United States along with 4.4 million injuries. 12 out of every 100,000 people who are involved in car accidents have their life taken from them. The factors that play into these have such a large variety since some can be from external forces that humans have little to no control over.
I am 18 and about 5 percent of people at my age have gotten in to a car accident, which
includes me. What I believe is a huge part in causing accidents on the road is our driving culture in America. When compared to other countries, especially those where cars play a big role of the lifestyle and industry America falls far behind. Countries like Germany which have less measures of precaution and smaller lanes where some cars can barely squeeze by. The rates of crash in Germany are half of those in the United States despite Germans having the ability to hit 200 mph on public roads.
Addressing the problem would have to come from teaching our drivers of today and tomorrow good habits and proper road etiquette. Knowing what to do would help drivers a lot more that things like lanes having shoulders and speed limits. Not only should drivers learn and follow strictly the rules of the road, they should also know how the environment treats their vehicle. Many crashes are due to people who drive cars that easily lose traction (a normal grocery-getter) over places where the road is wet or well-worn and cause the car to fall out of control or even hydroplane. I believe there should be less emphasis in speeding tickets and a lot more on certain cars driving ways they should not since it endangers those in its surroundings.
When compared to a country where rules of the road are followed almost religiously, America’s crash rate is absurd. In order to help every driver a stronger culture should be introduced to all drivers and help them have a better understanding of not only the road, but the capabilities of them and their car.
