Behind The Driver’s Seat
When I started driving I wasn’t nervous. I didn’t think that getting in a car accident was in my cards. Until I had to drive to Grand Rapids for hockey practice every night. During one of those nights, I heard that two girls on the team above me ran into a tree on the highway. Both were pronounced dead on the scene. It could happen to anyone, it just takes one minor slip up and it could end up costing your life.
As much as drivers ed class seems like something you can blow off and ignore, you shouldn’t. I was able to learn before I started driving that some of the laws I was following were actually wrong. Drivers ed was able to clear many questions I had about driving on the road and I felt much safer about me and my surroundings. The test you take at the end of your class course determines if you have learned enough to go on to your second driving course. If you fail the test, you have to retake the class until you do pass. This makes sure that you are wanting and retaining the information you need to keep yourself and others safe on the road. It is important that you pay attention to these classes so you are able to reward yourself with being able to drive maturely and carefully on the road.
According to an article by The Wandering RV, 1.25 million people die per year on the road, that’s 3,287 people per day. There are many steps and precautions you can take before you put your car in drive and go. People don’t realize how mentally focused you have to be to drive. Your mind shouldn’t be anywhere but focused on the road and pedestrians around you. Many car accidents happen solely on the driver having too many distractions. Steps that should be taken to prevent car accidents can start by putting your phone away. If you have a car full of your friends, the focus shouldn’t be on them, they should be on keeping them safe and watching the road.
Individually, each person has something they should work on, including me. No one is perfect, and that especially includes driving. I have many things I should work on to perfect, especially at my age. I need to work on my braking skills. I don’t brake slow enough to prepare myself for the winter months. Braking is very difficult when the roads are covered with ice, so practicing now would help me get in the habit of that.
As a teenager, I think that all drivers have something they need to work on. Driving isn’t always as easy as it looks, but it can become easier with practice. It’s all a matter of working together to keep everyone on the roads safer for everyone.
