Why Driving is so Important

My name is Kaitlyn Johnson and I am a senior at Coronado High School, in Colorado Springs, Colorado. To give you a bit of background to understand why I am applying for this scholarship is because when I was two my mother died in a car accident. She feel asleep at the wheel and was not wearing her seat belt and was hit head on.

Driver education is such an important concept to learn due to all the deaths that occur from driving. Driving can be such an exciting thing but it is also super important and serious. Learning how to drive as well as the concept is important because when you are driving, your life is in your hands. When you get behind the wheel there is a high chance of getting into an accident. It’s important to learn how to drive a car as well as conditions you should or should not be driving a car. Driver education is important because of the risk you may be taking when getting behind the wheel, and it’s important to learn to be aware of others.

Because there are so many drivers on the road these days it’s important to beware of others as well as yourself. A person needs to be mentally capable and competent in order to drive a vehicle. Taking extra processions is not always a bad thing. People also need to be aware of their speeds. Many people are selfish when driving and think where they are going matters more than someone else. They need to be aware of other drivers as well as new teen drivers on the road. There are so many teens that get into accidents because they are unaware or unsure, and more experienced drivers have less patience.

I as a teen have not been in an accident, but my mother was in an accident, and I know a few tennagers my age that have been in serious accidents. The teens that I know that have been in accidents have been from stop and go traffic as well as being under the influence, or simply not paying attention to what is on the road or where the road is leading to. In today’s society almost everyone is texting and driving because they can not wait to answer the phone. People are starting to get better at it which leads to a bigger problem of they are quite often texting while driving.

I personally while driving put my phone farther than arms distance to avoid the temptation. I also know that if I crash I’m out of a car and I need my car as my transportation to work and school because my parents can’t drive me at my leisure. I usually try to talk to my parents while they are driving to avoid them having the temptation of picking it up to check their phone. When I drive I try to be aware of where I am as well as what cars are around me and prepare to switch lanes ahead of time if I know I have an exit to take.

Driving is such a vital task we all do everyday and we don’t think about doing the task all the time. When it becomes like a second function that is when we start to lose perception and awareness of where we are and what is going on while we are driving. Like my mother for instance, she was not well awake enough to drive and was not wearing her seat belt and it cost her life.
