When Life Takes a Turn
When Life Takes a Turn
From the moment we reach that six month point after our fifteenth birthday, we begin preparing for our life on the road. The start of driving school and practice with an adult is only the beginning to the lessons that we will carry on for the rest of our lives. Having a concrete education and understanding of the vehicle and road is essential to ensuring the safety of the driver, passenger, pedestrians, and others. It is important that drivers study and evaluate the information that is given to them because the tests that take place on the road, if unprepared, can lead to a grim outcome. One example of the importance of having a good driving education is the weather factor. Driving in the rain too fast could lead to the car hydroplaning and it is important to know to drive slower and to keep a larger distance from other cars than usual. In addition, a common response to hydroplaning is to slam the brakes which will have the driver of the car lose control even more. Knowing what to do in situations of possible stress and/or danger, and how to avoid them is key in keeping drivers on the road safe. The steps that can be taken to reduce the number of deaths is proper education and reinforcement. It is important to not just teach or mention these lessons once, but to reinforce these lessons repeatedly over time. Schools should also offer more driver safety information and education, since many high school drivers will be getting on the road for the first time. I have never been in an accident myself, but I have seen others drive recklessly many times before. If one thinks that being dangerous is cool, that is their opinion. It is very much not cool however, if that choice puts others in danger around them. While there have been moments where my friends have been irresponsible on the road, it only really took me requesting them to be stop which fixed the problem. A passenger has every right to disclose how comfortable they are with the driver, and I believe passengers should voice that opinion freely if necessary. Many of us have families, friends, and loved ones to go home to. There is no speed or maneuver that is worth risking that being taken away from anybody. Ultimately, the best way to be a good driver for yourself and others on the road is to be alert, calm, and respectful. Ensuring that one is focused as opposed to distracted is vital when it comes to driver safety as well as being able to keep emotions in check. If someone is driving dangerously, do not put yourself or others in harm’s way. Alert the proper authorities or safely distance yourself from said driver. Overall, it is important to understand that driving on the road is a privilege and a responsibility that should not be taken lightly. Knowing how to handle other drivers and situations on the road, is just as important as getting a license and a car.
