Because You’re Worth It

Driving is a part of everyday life, there is a constant flow of traffic in the U.S. that never stops. Many people hardly pay any attention to car wrecks and the amount of deaths that happen each day due to car wrecks. Personally, I believe we need to make driver safety more of a priority in our everyday lives and be more attentive to what we can prevent on the road. I believe that through driver education we can reduce the number of car accidents and deaths each year by informing young teens how important being a responsible and safe driver is.

We all know the process of acquiring our learners permit and eventually our drivers license. However, I believe that we need to take more safety precautions when giving out permits and licenses. A lot of bad car accidents happen because of unfit driving conditions due to snow, rain, etc. Most new drivers don’t get taught how to drive in these conditions and in return become threats to themselves and others while driving in these conditions. I took a safety education class and even then they didn’t teach you how to drive in bad road conditions. I believe we need to take this into more consideration when handing over permits and licenses because twenty one percent of car accidents happen in bad weather.

I have never personally been in a serious car wreck. One of my biggest worries when driving with friends and family is electronics. While going to lunch with friends they are often on their phones changing the music or texting people. I feel very unsafe in the car as they are not directing their full attention to driving. I have always been taught to queue music before I start driving and either have a friend read a text message you receive while driving or if you are alone you just ignore it until you can pull over somewhere safe and read it. We can simply fix this problem by just being responsible.

I think that overall being a safe driver is really important and up to the own individual to enforce it. They can do this by putting on their seatbelt, putting away electronics, following the speed limits, being a defensive driver, and telling other people when you feel uncomfortable with their actions while driving. By doing this, I believe that we could significantly reduce the amount of deaths and car accidents in the U.S.
