The Importance of Driver’s Ed
The importance of driver education is tremendous due to the fact that many drivers’ lives are taken each year in automobile accidents. It is to help prevent wrecks by explaining what not to do in different situations and how to avoid them all together. In addition, driving education explains the different road signs and how to perform standard mobility options when stuck. Statistics show that 75 percent of teens who do not participate in driver education classes are more likely to have an accident, or get a ticket. However, there are multiple options to help reduce collisions or accidents. For example, one method could be making it an elective class for 1 semester in high school for those who wish to take it for half a credit. Secondly, schools could post online or in the bulletin to let students know of classes offered by the school or locally. Personally, after 10th grade was over I looked into the summer school programs held at Fair Play High School. They offered up to 10 students drivers education in the form of class time for the first week. Then, for the next three weeks was hands on learning where we got behind the wheel with an instructor and practiced one hour a day. Since then I have been driving for 2 years and have never had any form of accident.
Looking back on my driving record I can recall two times where I have seen an accident happen about 20 yards in front of me. For example, I was about to get on the highway and one car was opposite me. There was a third car coming for my right which was the other car left. Without looking the car pulled out onto the highway as the car already on the highway was passing slamming into the car. The car was sent into the ditch and the person that hit him kept on driving so we got out and helped him even though we were pressed for time. Another time was in a Walmart parking lot which also happened right in front of me. A lady was pulling out onto the main road in which a very impatient person pulls out in front of her. However, they ended up sorting everything out without getting the cops involved by swapping insurance info. Some things I can do to become a better driver myself is stay focused and not get too relaxed behind the wheel. Getting too comfortable while driving is dangerous because you’re more likely to cause an accident, or you think you’re invincible and nothing will happen to you. Secondly, being able to communicate effectively with others while driving is a great way to help avoid collisions. Lastly, I think I am a little too impatient sometimes or drive slightly too fast. So, if I practiced to just take things slow and not be in such a hurry I can be a safer driver. Overall, driver’s education is very important in preventing accidents on the road.
