Driving is a Privledge
When I turned 17, I had one thing on my mind, driving. Driving by my definition meant freedom. This rite of passage was long-awaited and I was super excited to get behind the wheel and on the road.
My uncle congratulated me upon successful completion of my road test, he said remember driving is a privilege, Evan. I wasn’t sure what he meant by this and it took me a while to understand- we all need to respect the road and the responsibility that goes along with it.
I have never been in an accident, but last summer my family and I took a road trip with an RV. 6000 miles was an incredible adventure and I witnessed accidents and careless driving while on the trip. Loss of life is devastating to a family and we can avoid accidents by respecting the rules and laws of our roads.
As a licensed driver, we have a responsibility to uphold the rules and laws of the road. If we have a lack of consideration and respect, the disregard can cause catastrophic loss of human life. Each year, we hear about tragedy and most of the time these events can be avoided by following the rules of the road that we were taught.
The process the DMV has created which includes classes in high school, road practice with a certified teacher position a driver for success. Still, it is up to the individual to respect the laws and responsibility that goes along with the privilege to drive on our roads.
One suggestion, is to create a follow up test at age 20. As a young driver, we are constantly being reminded of the rules of the road through experience. The problem here is that we don’t drive much in the first two years of being licensed. This test could be administered online and submitted to the DMV for record.
