Safe Driving

Although many drivers are unaware of the brutal fatality rates due to unsafe and uneducated drivers, the evidence is abundant. The numbers rise with each second that action is not being taken in favor of slowing down and producing safe and effective drivers. As a country, the US could benefit from implementing a mandatory drivers education for those who want to obtain a driver’s license.

As a teenager, I have seen many who have been victims of unsafe driving. My own brother, who had chosen to drive home while in dangerous weather conditions, could have been killed as he spinned across the highway and was almost hit head on by a semi. After this experience, I found that there is a strong importance to safe driving, and the emotional effects that a near death experience can have on not only the victim, but their loved ones. Although my brother is one of few who are very lucky to be alive, there are many more who are not so lucky. In many instances, like drunk driving, it is not always the driver who is victim to fatality, but the people around them. In one situation, a woman hit a child who was walking across the street, and was too drunk to stop and help the child, and drove off. Not only was that child affected by losing his life, but the family to the child was hurt in unrepairable ways emotionally. Along with that, the woman who was the criminal had to live with her actions of putting herself and others in the face of danger. These accidents are detrimental, and many situations could be brought to an end.

While there is a driver’s test for those wishing to gain access to a driver’s license, many who take the test do not actually learn to the full extent the importance of safe driving. If the US were to implement a mandatory driver’s education program to anyone wishing to get a driver’s license. In these classes, students would be informed on the effects of unsafe driving in examples such as drunk driving, driving under emotional stress, or immature driving. This important segment be followed by the benefits of following laws and safety procedures, like putting on your seatbelt, following the speed limit, staying off your phone, and driving in good physical and mental condition. By going through this program, driver’s would have a fuller understanding of the effects of safe driving, and would be more likely to follow the law and safety procedures.

With that being said, having a mandatory driver’s education program would not indefinitely stop accidents from happening, but it can reduce the amount of fatal accidents tremendously, and allow for a better understanding of the importance of things like speed limits or seat belts. With this, many families and children will be able to get on the road everyday confident that they will be surrounded by drivers out to be as safe of a driver as the possibly can.
