A Teen Drivers Point of View
I have recently started to drive, accompanied, and on my own. I had always been afraid to drive because I thought it was difficult and took a long time to learn. Growing up I had also seen several instances where people were being careless when driving. As a new driver, I like to be alert and focus on what I’m doing. I avoid getting distracted and talking to my passengers. I have noticed that this has helped me be a safe driver, and while I occasionally make minor mistakes I have never been at risk of an accident.
I have been a passenger in many people’s cars and have been concerned for my safety while the car was in their control. Lots of people call and text while driving which can be distracting and dangerous. I was once on my way to northern California and was a passenger in a family member’s car. They were driving, through a mountain, during snowfall, and talking on the phone. Situations like this make you wonder how some people have acquired a license, but of course, after being a safe and perfect driver during our driver’s test you can drive however you feel is comfortable for you. And I believe that for this reason, we should have stricter driving laws to protect those who are being safe.
Another thing I’ve witnessed is dancing or singing while driving. I was driving with my father in the passenger seat on our way back from the grocery store. I was going straight and next to me on a turning was another car, both of us waiting at a red light. Then suddenly a car comes parading down the street with a young girl at the wheel, she hits the brakes to avoid hitting the car in the turn lane. She was driving at a really high speed and did not hit the brakes with enough time to avoid hitting the car, it smelt like burnt rubber. She managed to avoid a big crash, but still bumped the car from behind.
In today’s world, we have lots of technology that can cause distractions. Of course, technology isn’t always a bad thing, newer cars have better technology to help keep drivers safe and focused. Things like a lane departure warning system can alert you if you move out of your lane, or a backup camera can alert you to avoid hitting a car behind you.
This past summer, on the way back from Utah, some of my family members got into an accident and we experienced several fatalities. They still do not want to say exactly what happened, but we are aware that the crash happened because of irresponsible driving. Two members of my family passed away and another from the vehicle as well. Driving through mountains and curves is very risky and you need to be alert at all times.
In conclusion, distracted driving is dangerous and can affect not only you and the other person but several others. Chain accidents happen frequently and can be avoided if people were careful when driving.
