Being able to drive is an important part of our daily lives. It is so common that many people forget how dangerous this activity can really be. Driving is also something that the younger population may put on a pedestal: it is fantasized. To bring in the realities of driving, everyone needs driver education. Driver Education is a vital part of drilling the various dangers of driving and getting introduced to basic driving skills with a trusted instructor. This program fights the fantastical viewpoint that driving is usually shown in with facts and logic about the realities of driving. It is extremely important that future drivers understand the impacts of reckless and irresponsible behavior behind the wheel.

Many may think that we need more futuristic inventions to make the roads safer. However, I think a lot of the dangers are based on human error. Practices such as speeding, driving under the influence, and not following basic rules puts everyone on the road in danger, not just the driver breaking the rules. Putting more focus on driver education by incorporating a parent teaching class would help the students learn similar lessons from people they love and their instructors. Teaching parents how to stay calm when their children are behind the wheel and stressing that they enforce strict driving rules will diminish the divide that students see in their home versus the classroom. Another idea would be to have review courses for those already holding licenses, so they can refresh their rules and be role model drivers for the students. It would be similar to professionals who need to review their license to practice. The tests could depend on previous driving habits, accidents, and tickets. Additionally, since technology is rapidly improving, we could also include eye monitoring and breathalyzing technology with cars to evoke a better response for responsible driving.

I have been involved in a few accidents and have also witnessed irresponsible driving done by the adults in my life. As for keeping myself and friends safe, I can stress the importance of following the rules of the road, including speed limits and other small rules that may be easy to ignore. I can look into routes and destinations beforehand, so I am not worried about where I am going and focused on the GPS rather than the road. I believe another important aspect of being safe is driving being emotionally stable. I can do the same for my friends by noticing when they are under stress and offering to drive in their place.

Overall, Driver Education is an important milestone in a person’s life. As with any program, there could always be improvements, but there is no denying that it is a necessary practice that has helped many individuals.
