Driver Education
In The Driver’s Seat
Driving is an immense responsibility and it should not be taken lightly. Driving in our nation is extremely dangerous. In 2019, an estimated 38,000 people died in the United States from a car accident. At sixteen years old you are not aware of the dangers that await you on the roads. Drivers of all ages drive dangerously, even though it is most common in young people. You never think it can happen to you until it happens, and everything becomes a blur. Some of the most dangerous driving habits include driving under the influence, speeding, distracted driving, not wearing a seatbelt, etc. It is important for schools to provide a driver’s education class to provide learning opportunities for young drivers, making them aware of common habits. If students learn how to drive safe on the roads, the number of deaths resulting from driving will decrease. To prevent motor vehicle deaths there are easy steps we can all follow. For example if everyone on the roads knew and obeyed traffic laws, the number of car accidents would greatly decrease, which is why it is important to be taught in schools to future drivers. Drivers should also become aware that you can only trust yourself driving on the roads. You never know another’s cars next move so you should be aware of your surroundings to stop in time if needed. The most important step overall to reduce the number of deaths related to car accidents is to simply wear a seatbelt, which can save your life. A lot of people don’t realize that they are putting the other passengers in danger when they don’t wear a seatbelt because unrestricted passengers can become moving projectiles. Since I am so young I have experienced multiple times of my peers driving irresponsibly. Teenage drivers are known to drive recklessly by texting and driving while speeding, most not realizing the danger this is causing to them and those around them. The most important safety tip for teenage driver’s is to never reach for your phone while driving because nothing is more important than your life. I can become a better driver by making an effort to improve my driving skills. I will limit all interruptions and place a spotlight on the road. I will drive slower in weather conditions, make sure my lights are on when needed, and finally make sure all my passengers have a seatbelt on. We need to remind people that driving is not something that should be taken lightly. A car should not be a toy, it is something that should be taken seriously, because it can ruin your life and the lives of people around you. People should periodically check up on their cars and know the warning signs of when to seek service, to prevent future accidents. Driver safety is one of the most important things in the world and is something that should be taught profoundly by professionals. Educating our nation about driver safety will decrease the number of deaths related to car accidents every year.
