Staying Safe: Being Aware While Driving

The importance of driver’s education in decreasing the number of deaths on the roads is awareness. In driver’s ed, they taught everything from road signs to the consequences of drunk driving. The key aspect is making the learner know everything about driving so they don’t have any unanswered questions left when they get on the road. There’s a possibility that if there are any unanswered questions on the road, those could lead to accidents and fatalities. Driver’s education is meant to prevent things like this from happening. It’s an essential course for everyone to take to become more aware of the roads and practice safe driving.

Some steps that can be taken to prevent fatalities while driving are: staying focused on the road, being aware of the environment, driving the speed limit, and not being a danger to others. When driving your focus is only supposed to be on the road itself. One should not be distracted on their phone, talking, or looking at scenery. One glance away from the street before you can easily take your life or someone else’s. Being aware of the environment is vital so you know what to expect. If you see that there’s a car accident ahead you can adjust your speed to be safer. Each state created speed limits to ensure safe driving among citizens. Drive according to the speed limit posted, regardless of if you’re late or not. Driving over the speed limit is illegal and dangerous. Being dangerous to others on the road includes: under the influence while driving, having unpleasant emotions, and being mentally unstable. Before you drive make sure that nothing is constricting you from being the safest that you could be.

In my lifetime I have been in 3 accidents. The first accident was at Wal-Mart with my family. We were in a PT Cruiser backing out of the parking lot. Across from us was a lifted pickup backing up as well. My mom honked her horn, but the truck continued to back into us. The back of the truck entered the passenger window, which was where I was seated. I instantly jumped over to my mom in the driver’s seat. I can honestly say that if I didn’t jump over to my mom, I would have suffered a brain injury. The second instance was on a bus on the way to school. After my bus had finished picking up all the stops, we were headed to school. Like normal I was on my phone until I heard a *CRASH*. The crash sounded like something from a tv commercial. What happened was that my bus driver had hit a car with an elderly lady from the back. The elderly woman was okay and did not suffer any injuries that I know of. The third accident was on another school bus. We were making our way back home. My bus was following the line of busses leaving the school. We got past one of the main streets and made a turn and we were going straight. As we were going straight, my bus driver didn’t see that the bus in front of us had its brake lights on and crashed into it. All the people on both busses did not have substantial injuries, but it was one of the most traumatizing events for everyone involved.

As a driver, I promise to pay attention to my surroundings. I will look through all my mirrors to make sure that it’s safe to pass, I will be aware of the obstacles that lay in front of me, and I will not be distracted while on the road. One of things I would hate to cause is a death relating to me being unsafe to anyone else. I already know how traumatizing it is to be in an accident and I don’t want to inflict that pain upon anyone or their family.
