As an anxious teen, I know the excitement of wanting to drive. As teens begin to drive they don’t understand how dangerous driving can truly be. I attended driver education because I didn’t want to wait until I was 18. In that class, I learned so much that you can’t teach yourself. Driver education is an important class to take as a teen because they thoroughly explain what common accidents are and how they occur.
As a teen, driving makes you feel like you have the freedom to go anywhere you want. At first, I didn’t take into consideration how dangerous driving can be. Most people think that it’s uncommon, but when I went to driver education they explained that a high amount of deaths occur every year from driving. One way driver education can teach the students about precaution while driving to reduce the deaths is by showing videos of people who have been in accidence because not many teens want to read an article about car accidence. Videos are great ways to get the teen’s attention since they already have to read a lot from simply attending school. Also explaining to the students why most accidents occur would help them understand what not do to protect themselves and others around them. Another thing that driver education could do is quiz the students on what are the most common reasons for accidents that result in death.
Recently two of my family members were in car accidents, thankfully it wasn’t an accident that caused one of their lives, but it did cost them their cars. After, my mom was taken to the hospital because her neck was hurting, and she had a bad headache. The doctors told her she was clear to return home because she wasn’t in any danger. Unlike her car, it’s completely recked from the back. One of my cousins got in a car accident because he was driving irresponsibly and decided to use his phone while trying to make a turn, as he took the turn another car hit him because both of them were distracted with their phones.
Since I’m a new driver, I plan to take more precautions to make sure I don’t put others in danger because I’m distracted. I plan to follow all the rules that I learned during driver education. I know most teens like to go over the speed limit because they want to get to certain places quicker, and I think that it’s better to get there alive than getting there by speeding through the roads. I will not use my phone while driving because both of my hands have to be on the steering wheel, and my eyes and mind should always be on the road. I won’t let anyone peer pressure me into speeding or put anyone’s life at risk. I will also make sure that everyone has their seat belts on, even if they refuse to wear it. I’d rather take more precautions than be regretful.
