Drivers Education essay
Marina Brown
Cars were built and designed for transportation and to be used to our advantage. As we know, there are many reckless drivers on the road. Many of us are taught to drive firsthand or took the Driver’s Education Course when we were preparing. With this knowledge in mind, many people still fail adhere to the rules, regulations, laws, and speeding limits while on the road.
The importance of driver’s education is key cannot be overstated. There are a countless number of accidents and incidents that happen every single year. On average, 6 million car accidents occur each year, with about 16,438 per day. With a driver’s education, individuals can pinpoint issues and concerns when it comes to safety on the road. As a driver, people should be aware of their space and surroundings including in their own vehicle.
Fortunately, there are steps that can be taken to reduce the number of deaths related to driving. Most of these steps can be applied to many life scenarios. For example, if in the future my friends and I all decided to go to a party where there is alcohol, we would need to agree that one person needs to remain sober in order to drive everyone home. I would not mind being that person, so that my friends and myself could all arrive home safely. People typically know about their plans in advance, so they should take extra care to be safe. It takes just a matter of minutes to make a plan including who’s driving and where they will be taking everyone after. Planning and communication are two important factors that can help reduce the number of deaths related to driving.
In my personal life, I have experienced friends and family driving irresponsibly. One morning, during my first period class, the principal announced some very sad news. One of our seniors at the time was involved in a car accident and died at the scene. Starr was her name, and she was pinned under an SUV. There was much grief over the loss of one of the brightest and most beautiful stars ever created. This hit home for me. No one ever expects such a tragic accident to happen so close to home or to lose a loved one in the process.
Not knowing the predicaments of our daily lives, we need to take all of the steps necessary to keep ourselves and others safe. One of the first steps we can all take as drivers is awareness. We need to be consciously aware of our surroundings. Conscious awareness describes the mental state of person being aware of situations and events in their life. As a driver, I will use awareness on the road and in my vehicle. Four questions I may ask myself about my conscious awareness are: What is the name of road I am on? Who is in the car with me? Am I following speed limits and traffic signals? Where am I going and why?
Others can be safer drivers as well. Many people fail to be aware of their surroundings and to block out distractions. Being a more aware driver can be as simple as checking to see if your signal lights are working or driving slower than you usually would on a rainy day. Also, using emotional intelligence while driving can prevent accidents. For example, in a traffic jam, an angry person behind you may honk their horn and yell out inappropriate language. What would you do? Do you act in the same fashion towards them? Or would you ignore that person, clear your mind and keep eyes on the road?
The ultimate driving goal should always be becoming a better and safer driver. In some way or another, we can apply these emotional intelligence and conscious awareness to both our daily lives and our driving habits.
