Driver Education: In the Driver’s Seat

Driving can be fun, especially when you are 16-18 and you want to impress others. However, driving is also a huge responsibility and it is devastating to receive so many notifications each day about how many crashes there are and how many people die from those crashes. If people were more aware of their actions then that should really be able to reduce the number of crashes each year. By showing more people the videos that are shown in drivers education it would really help open people’s eyes. If they could see the stories of those mourning a lost loved one because of a reckless driver, it could make a difference.
Since young drivers are more prone to being careless I know that showing them videos that show consequences will bring awareness to them and will make a difference. Sometimes though, it is not just the youths fault, it is also the adults who the youth look up to. It all starts at home, so adults need to realize that what they do will be copied by their children most of the time. A parent driving safely and following all the rules then their child is more likely to do the same. It is compulsory that parents teach their kids the cause and effect of recklessly driving and that the aftereffects will not be solved with a slap on the hand and an apology.

I personally have never been in a car accident but I had a friend who was in one. Fortunately everyone was fine and no one had to go to the hospital. But my friend’s car had been wrecked in the front. His parents were upset because he had the car for only 2 weeks. When I asked him about it he said that the car in front had abruptly stopped causing the second to suddenly stop, and then there was my friend who had stopped last. He did not brake fast enough and had hit the car in front of him who then hit the car in front of them. This is a situation where you will not think that it will happen to you. Even as a safe driver you can never be too careful and it can still happen to you. I have even been in situations where I have almost been in a crash because the other person was not careful they did not see me, they would cut me off or not let me in the lane I needed to be in.

There must be courtesy on the road, the worst things I have seen happen on the road are the ones who had no courtesy and decided to fight on the road with their cars. Not only are they endangering themselves but they are also endangering everyone else around them. People need to know that just because they are in a car does not mean that they can take a bigger risk when fighting with someone. They must realize that there is still another person in the car next to them and they need to be nice. By learning courtesy and encouraging it, it will make a huge difference in the number of crashes.

Accidents happen and not all of them can be avoided. Even though not all accidents can be avoided we can all try our best to dwindle the amount of crashes that happen. We need to ensure that when someone drives they know the risk they are taking. They need to be educated and shown videos or hear stories about a tragic crash. They need to know that this is real and it happens to anyone whether they are reckless or not.
