The Importance of Drivers Education

Drivers Education Initiative Scholarship Essay

The importance of Drivers Education in reducing the number of deaths as a result of driving is teaching the fundamentals of driving, By teaching these fundamentals beginner level drivers are more likely to drive safely because they are taught the possible consequences of dangerous or irresponsible driving. “Studies showed that the drivers who had taken a driver’s ed course were involved in fewer crashes: 11.1% of the driver’s ed group, as opposed to 12.9% of those who hadn’t taken a course, had been involved in a crash. The study also showed that those who had taken a driver’s ed course were considerably less likely to get a moving violation ticket. 10.4% of those who had taken a course had received a ticket, compared to 18.3% of those who hadn’t.”

With this being said students who don’t go through the process of Drivers Education may not fully grasp some of the most important rules to save driving and may become a part of that 12.9% and 18.3% who get in accidents and or get tickets for violations. I believe that this percentage for people who didn’t take a Drivers Ed course got tickets and into car accidents because they had parents/ guardians teach them and sometimes that is not as good as a trained professional that you can learn from in a Drivers Ed course.

The steps that can be taken to avoid car accidents are Developing a save attitude when driving, Get as much supervised driving as possible, never drink and drive, never text and drive, limit passengers, and for new drivers limit unsupervised late night driving. Attitude is a major factor when driving because when people are angry they are proven to be more likely to make irrational decisions. Supervised driving helps because you can have somebody there to help guide you through your way when driving until you have enough experience to do it all on your own. Drinking and driving claims more than 10,000 lives per year because judgment, concentration, comprehension, coordination, visual acuity, and reaction time become impaired causing car accidents. Texting and driving claims 3,000+ lives per year because it is a distraction that people sometimes pay more attention to than the road causing severe injuries and death. This can also be the case with multiple passengers if you don’t have the experience to deal with it appropriately you may take your eyes off the road even for a split second and that is all it takes to cause a car accident. Late night driving limits your ability to be aware of all of your surroundings and if you don’t have the experience to drive at night this can also cause a car accident. So when driving at night have a licensed adult with you to help you learn and feel more comfortable driving at night.

I have not been involved in any car accidents as a result of irresponsible driving, but one as a result of a deer running into the road .
