Driving education awarness

Driving education awareness

The importance of driver education in reducing the number of deaths, is to help with the implementation of standard traffic rules of driving for the society to follow. Everyone who drives has passed a driving test and is aware of the rules, which allows us to be able to communicate between drivers without talking, only with signals and following the laws of the road.

The steps that can be taken to reduce the number of deaths related to driving are to make sure drivers remember what they have learned. This can be done by doing an online course and test every time they must renew their driver’s license. I would consider giving a conditional license for the first year, then, renewing them every five years and after the age of 70 to renew every two years with a physical. Sadly, cellphone use, alcohol and other substances while driving are responsible for car accidents, the publicity of these issues can help people become more conscious of the results, especially to the youth. Another important thing, is to check the car periodically, making sure the lights and brakes are working properly, as well, for the tires to be in good condition. Additionally, it would be good to educate the public about technics to use in case the car loses control or to know exactly what to do in case of an emergency.

I consider myself blessed since I haven’t experienced a car accident from driving irresponsibly, neither a family member nor friend. I do have a friend that was victim of a car accident from a driver that was using a cellphone while driving, luckily nobody was fatally or seriously injured, but it made everybody remember that it can happen to any of us even to the ones that take all the precautions.

The first step I would take to be a better and safer driver is to create a routine to go through first before getting in the car, like a checklist, especially for long trips. The checklist would have everything that has to do with the car working properly, for example, breaks, windshield whippers, oil, tires and fluids; with this, it is pertinent to know how the car works, referring to meaning of the lights that come on and off, on the dashboard. Also, I think it is important to have the inside of the car organized and to know where everything is, like the car’s manual, insurance, emergency phone numbers, emergency kit, water, and snacks. Everything should be arranged in a way to avoid over-reaching while driving as well not to have anything that can hurt the passengers or driver in case of an accident. Once I have everything in place, I would study the directions beforehand and not rely too much on GPS, since sometimes it can lose the connection, which can cause distractions and stress while driving. Furthermore, I would make sure I am well rested, and I am feeling good, it would be helpful, when possible, to contact the person that is located at the destination to let them know that I am on the way and give them an estimate of the arrival time. The preceding can be adopted for anyone and it would be a good plan to be incorporated in every household.

As a conclusion, I think it is imperative to insist on safety protocols that are related to cellphone use, alcohol or other substances while driving and to keep educating the public of the traffic rules and finally to not assume that the other drivers on the road know the laws and instead to be aware of our surroundings and be prepared.
