How Driving Experiences Help In Developing Defensive Drivers

Driver education teaches everything future drivers need to know to successfully drive.

However, while the driver’s manual teaches and introduces important rules and regulations, there is only so much to learn from the manual. Driving not only includes having knowledge about signs and rules of driving, for example, but driving requires adequate practice and hands-on learning.

One of the phrases most heard from the driver’s manual is “defensive driving”. When I was

learning to drive and going through the manual, the concept seemed simple and thought I understood. However, after having been a licensed driver for four years, I have learned what it really means to be a defensive driver. Simple things such as looking a couple of times to ensure no cars are coming before making a turn can prevent an accident. Developing habits during driving, like looking a couple times before changing lanes and making turns could make a huge difference. Another thing that I have noticed is many drivers on the road can be very distracted and not focused on the road. This factors as to why our focus as drivers needs to be on the road and paying attention to everything around us to ensure everyone’s safety.

I have only been in one accident during my time as a licensed driver. During the accident,

which was at night, the passenger side of my car was hit. That accident reminded me that people of all ages on the road despite what time it is. I know that might sound ridiculous but sometimes as a driver, I find myself not thinking like that. As drivers, we are too busy driving; only thinking about our destination and rushing to ensure we’re there on time. My accident, also, gave me perspective that some people even though they see you driving towards them might take the chance anyway and get on the road. Through my accident experience and time as a licensed driver, there are steps that I have taken to be a better driver. Checking mirrors and my blind spot are things I frequently do. I briefly mentioned how drivers can be distracted, whether they are on the phone or lost trying to figure out their way to their destination.

My motto when I think about driving is drive safe and practice being a defensive driver.

One major thing to keep in mind about driving is that you are not only driving for your safety but for others. While this factor is not the only reason for accidents, it is one of the more prominent. While you are the road, practice being a defensive driver. Waiting a couple seconds before driving after a traffic light turns green can make a big difference. These steps that you decide to take and incorporate during driving should become habits. As a driver, you have to understand that not every driver is focused on the road and practice safe driving. Not only to benefit you but for other drivers on the road with you.
