The Importance of Driver’s Education

Driver’s Education has the potential to save many lives. The only way humans develop beneficial habits are through repeating the process over and over until it becomes second nature. Driver’s Education, provided that it’s conducted in a safe, controlled environment allows new drivers to begin this process of practicing safe driving behaviors to prepare for actually driving without putting any risks onto the driver for doing so. Safe driving habits are crucial in avoiding accidents, both those that are the fault of the driver himself or a separate driver being irresponsible. Such behavior can not be incorporated through watching online videos and practicing while driving on public roads not only risks injury to the student driver, but exposes other drivers on the road. I personally witnessed this when a driver rear ended another vehicle while I was passing by in the opposite lane of travel. Had the at fault driver had learned safe driving habits, it is unlikely the accident would have occurred as the driver would have seen the stopped vehicle in front of them and safely reduced their own speed, avoiding the collision. No amount of technology with safety features can replace safety minded drivers driving defensively, and the best way to learn these skills is through Driver’s Education. However, far too many deaths occur due to driving even with this system in place. You see, it does a great job of addressing new drivers, but it doesn’t do a great job at helping older drivers who’ve become rusty get back into things safely. What could possibly happen is that someone’s driver’s license gets revoked after some period, around 10 years would be a good example, and afterwards a mandatory assessment is administered and if they pass they can get their license back with no hassle, but if they fail then they have to go through driver’s education. Although some may consider this too bothersome, you shouldn’t be driving anyways if you can’t pass a driving test and with the rise of apps like uber you can still get around just fine. Although I’ve never been in an accident that was of any consequence, I certainly do not wish for myself, the people I care about, or anybody else to be at risk of doing so, and the lives of others is much more important than being able to drive to work. However, as a student driver myself, I understand that I may not be the best driver around either, so I ‘m not exactly the greatest voice to take from either. There may be crucial things that I am missing. For example, I need to work on paying attention to things like potholes on the sides of the roads and arrows in the lanes of parking lots, as I’ve gotten into several sticky situations as a result of this obliviousness. I’m capable of watching cars and animals just fine, but things low to the road are my enemy. Regardless, this is my position on driver’s education, its strengths, and what we should do with it in order to make the roads safer.
