In The Driver’s Seat
Individuals who take the time to become educated drivers aren’t just saving their own lives but also saving the lives of others around them. In the early stages of driving, Drivers Ed is a great tool to help equip the driver with the necessary skills needed before getting behind the wheel. You learn everything from automotive basics, driving laws that apply to your state, and more importantly life saving driving maneuvers. Drivers Ed also teaches young drivers how to be in control of their own vehicle as well as anticipating the movements and actions taken by other drivers. Learning the importance of focused driving and how a single distraction can take away enough time for something to go wrong is one of the most valuable lessons taught when learning how to drive. Taking the time to learn the do’s and don’ts of driving could reduce the number of driving related deaths and accidents tremendously.
With distracted driving being one of the leading causes of accidents in the U.S., more states should enforce laws that prohibit the use of cell phones while driving. According to the Governors Highway Safety Association, twenty two states have already banned the use of handheld devices when driving, and more states should follow to further reduce the number of accidents caused by putting these devices first over safety. Small steps an everyday driver could be taking consist of putting their phone on “do not disturb” while driving, obeying all the traffic laws, and driving safely, even under time constraints. Drivers should also think twice about getting behind the wheel when under the influence. Your own safety and the safety of others should come first, and be something to think about before making a decision that could change your life or someone else’s.
Because I have personally experienced a car accident, I’ve been taught the value of focused driving first hand, and that operating a 4,000 pound machine is not something that should be taken lightly. Even though no one was harmed in the accident, the damages done to my vehicle were great enough to total the car. Just because I momentarily messed with my radio, for what felt like no longer than two seconds, I lost my first car that had been gifted to me by my parents. Since then, I have taken it upon myself to become a better driver and focus solely on the road until I get to my destination. Even though that is a situation I hope to never be in again, I am grateful for the valuable lessons that have come out of that situation. The experience caused me to reflect on my behavior as a driver and the moment-to-moment choices I make that could have an enormous impact on my future and the future of others.
Because of the car accident, I have chosen to change my routine and make different choices, I’ve started placing my phone in a specific place in my car where I cannot reach it until I get to my destination. I also try not to mess with the radio or adjust the air conditioning while I am driving, instead setting everything to my desired temperature, volume, and so on, before I begin driving. Although I am not perfect, I think everybody should adopt a similar routine to avoid putting themselves in a position where they are less likely to become distracted while driving and potentially harm themselves or others. It is important for people who witness a friend or family member driving irresponsibly, to inform them what they’re doing is unsafe. You could even offer to help them send that quick text message, or put on the song they are looking for. The highest priority for all drivers should be keeping their attention on the road, and remembering the value of their own life and the lives of others.
